Remarkable and unique 1946 Christmas card, 4.75 x 4, with a hand-drawn and then hand-colored caricature by Fields as Santa Claus smoking a cigar, the residual smoke spelling out, “Merry Xmas.” He has also signed the card, “W. C. Fields,” before carefully tracing over the signature using red paint. In fine condition, with a notation on the back identifying it as the comedian’s last Christmas card, as he died on December 25, 1946. Accompanying as provenance is a copy of the letter from the granddaughter of the item’s original recipient, stating that the card was sent to him for Christmas 1946 while Fields was in a sanitarium. The design was also reproduced on the frontispiece of the 1973 book, W. C. Fields by Himself. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
