ALS signed “Woody,” two onionskin pages, 8.5 x 11, December 2, 1941. Fields writes to his mistress Carlotta Monti. In part: “You must indeed feel qualified at having received so many offers…I am sorry you did not stay to see all of my picture, as I am anxious to know how it is going in the sticks. I would also be interested to know if the business was good or bad, I know what a busy woman you are. You didn’t have time to look. I was most interested to know you are returning here to again resume your study of opera…Experience teaches you nothing you are suffering from a very stubborn case of exaggerated ego. Give a few moments thought a day to someone else beside yourself and your virgin sister and your operatic voice. You have quite a number of friends who are sincerely fond of you. But I am inclined to believe they are going to lose interest if you do not take hold of yourself.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a few wrinkles.
“Woody” was the nickname bestowed upon Fields by his mistress, whom he met in 1932 and carried on a relationship with until his 1946 death. Monti referred to the rotund actor as a “dream lover” while Fields, it would appear, found an outlet not only for his romantic energy but also a remedy for his chronic loneliness. The film referenced by Fields here is Never Give a Sucker an Even Break, one of two films in which Monti had a bit part. The motion picture holds the distinction of being the last to star Fields as the main character, as failing health relegated him to supporting roles or cameo appearances for the remainder of his career. The comedian’s tone appears deadly serious, as he cautions his paramour to take stock of her actions.
