Scarce ALS signed “Great Man,” two pages, 6 x 9.5, Soboba Mineral Hot Springs (San Jacinto, California) letterhead, January 20, 1939. Handwritten letter to Carlotta Douglas, in full: “Here we are John and Me. Had quite a fight on Picture and felt so tired I came here. Passed your kids out near the pool twice and thought of you. It is raining and I am enjoying it. Hope to sleep tonight. I am up stairs in Siwash. The picture is not finished and they are trying to give me the works. But I have every confidence of winning as usual. Even if I lose I always feel there will be a rematch & I will win that fight. Don’t let them sell you any of the Bridges while you are in New York. Remember you are a country girl in a big city. I hope you have put your jewelry in a safety deposit box. Best wishes. Sorry I muffed your birthday.” Fields adds a couple of postscripts, signing “G.M.” at the conclusion: “Saturday still raining pretty heavy too. It will most likely be snowing up at Idle-wild, so we will drive up there, and take a slant. To think warm rain & palm trees and in less than 30 minutes snow. You Californians are truly a fortunate people” and “30 planes are going to try to land here on John’s field Sunday tomorrow. It’s going to be exciting & dangerous.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original hand-addressed mailing envelope.
