<B>Volga, SD</B></I> - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 608 <B>The First NB</B></I> Ch. # 6099<BR>This is a very rare note from a one bank community in the proverbial one horse town. While we would like to enliven our description of this item with a learned dissertation concerning the early homesteaders here who came from Russia, and, homesick for the motherland, named the community after their beloved river, the reality is that there were no Russians, the town name has nothing to do with the Volga River (it was named after an even more obscure community of the same name in neighboring Iowa), and the place was originally called Bandy Town after its original settler. The census shows just three large notes, including this piece, with a large outstanding of a ridiculously low $490 in 1935.
