Volcanic Lever Action magazine pistol with detachable wood stock, .38 cal., rare 16” iron octagon barrel, brass frame, wood grips, #256. This desirable predecessor to the Henry Rifle is in overall very good condition showing hints of original blue in protected areas mixed with and even plum patina on the barrel assembly with some scattered pin prick pitting; the muzzle of the barrel shows some old cleaning on the top flat and possible slight draw filing; the front end of the loading tube is missing the small retaining pin that can be restored easily and the spring compressor for the loading tool appears to be an old replacement that can also be easily restored; the barrel address is clear and reads “The Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. Patent New Haven, Conn Feb. 14, 1854”. The brass frame shows a pleasing mellow patina and is in overall very good condition; the bore is good, the action good and there are slight traces of case color on the hammer, trigger and lever. The grips are very good with a couple of scratches and mars from storage; the rear sight is an older replacement however, this lot is accompanied by an original rear sight for this weapon. The detachable wood stock is in overall good condition showing an interesting attachment mechanism consisting of an iron fore end piece that fits into the rear portion of the back strap along with a smaller stabilizing pin, all locked into the back strap with a set screw coming through the bottom of the butt strap. The wood stock is in overall very good condition with better-than-average graining and a brass butt plate. A great Volcanic in the rare barrel length and with the even rarer shoulder stock. Est.: $9,000-$18,000.
