Very early production, Navy style pistol manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in 1855-1856. The pistol has a 12-inch octagon barrel with integral magazine. Production Volcanic Repeating Arms Navy Pistols had 8-inch or 16-inch barrels. The pistol has a brass frame with adjustable rear sight, casehardened lever with round finger hole and no spur, casehardened hammer and two-piece walnut grips. The barrel lacks the usual factory legend. The left side of the frame is stamped with the serial number "12" below a three-letter monogram that appears to be "CVA". The serial number "12" is also stamped on the base of the lever. The right side of the lever is stamped with the number "1". The low serial number, absence of "Volcanic" markings on the barrel and non-standard barrel length may indicate that the pistol is a pre-production sample. The Volcanic Arms pistols and carbines are rare and historically important firearms. The lever action and spring-loaded, integral magazine were the basis successful Henry and early Winchester rifles. Oliver Winchester's acquisition of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in 1857 was the start of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Finally, the self-contained .41 caliber Volcanic "Rocket Ball" cartridge was a major step in the evolution of small arms cartridge development.
