2" Bore, 27" Barrel. Originally made for the Dutch East India Trading Company, this cannon likely arrived in the Texas Spanish Colonial Frontier as part of purchases of used military equipment circa 1810. It has been in a private collection in central West Texas over the last 40 years. The private collector purchased it from a rancher near the Rio Grande just across from the small town of Guerrero, Mexico.
This cannon was designed for use on a small coastal Brigade by the Dutch East India Trading Company, then likely used by a Presidio on the colonial frontier for wall defense. Many cannons entered the Texas colonial frontier by this method or could have been removed from a damaged or sunken ship in the Caribbean, then delivered to La Bahia, where they were distributed out to the new missions along the Rio Grande.
We do not know the name of the rancher near Guerrero where the cannon was found. It is made if bronze which was a favorite of the Spanish and Mexican governments and was a practical defensive weapon on the fast moving Spanish Colonial frontier. Jim Guimerin, (The History Shop).
