Russian-born American writer (1899-1977) who is best known for the controversial 1955 classic Lolita, widely hailed as one of the greatest novels of the 20th century. Desirable ALS in French and Cyrillic, signed “V. Nabokoff,” one page on the reverse of a 5.75 x 4 postcard, postmarked December 24, 1935. Letter to his French translator Denis Roche, in full (roughly translated): "I write to you to thank you for your wonderful letter and wish you happy holidays. I like that everything is white—the city starts to look like St. Petersburg. I promise you, as soon as 'Despair' is released, you will get it. The editor promises to me that it will be ready for Christmas, but as you know, what are the promises of editors!" Nabokov adds a brief postscript, "My wife joins in sending wishes." In fine condition. An early example of a Nabokov letter enhanced by the rare spelling of his last name.
