ALS signed “Jack,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 3.5, July 20, 1967. Handwritten letter to Hollywood gossip columnist Radie Harris, writing that Vivien Leigh's maid "told me that she had written to you to tell you how peacefully and painlessly death came. Try to derive the comfort there is in that the fact that she had no premonition of it. She, who so bravely bore so many adversities and trials, at least didn't have to face that. Of all the lines of her beloved Shakespeare the one that keeps recurring to me is Hamlet's 'Rest, rest, perturbed spirit.' Thank God for her. We were wonderfully lucky who knew her and her love. It was worth a thousand times the misery of the present—if that's calculable." In fine condition. Merivale (1917–1990) was a British theatre actor and occasional supporting player in British films, who lived with Leigh from 1958 until her death in 1967.
