British explorer best known as the leader of the 1957 Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, the first expedition to cross Antarctica. Two items: ALS, one page, 7 x 9, personal letterhead, July 22, 1994. Fuchs writes of fellow explorer, Edmund Hillary, to a friend, in full: “Yes, I meet Sir Edmund when I visit N. Z. or he comes to Britain. The hardest part of the Trans-Antarctic Expedition journey was survival in the many zones of crevasses”; and a glossy 3.5 x 5.5 photo of Fuchs gazing over the ocean, signed in black ballpoint. In fine condition, with a central horizontal and vertical fold to the letter, and slightly irregular ink adhesion to the photo.
