Lot of 2. 1) Rare. Virginia & Truckee Railroad Company check No. 559, issued to treasurer Mark Hopkins for $22,614 dollars in 1876. Signed by HM Yerington as vice president and secretary Thorton. Not signed by Mark Hopkins on reverse (endorsed for him by EW Hopkins). RN-G. Spindle cancel. Mark Hopkins was one of the "Big Four" founders of the Central Pacific Railroad. A Whig and later associated with the Free Soil Party, Hopkins was an abolitionist and an organizer of the Republican Party in California. He died just two years late (1878) in Yuma, Arizona, leaving his $20-40 million estate to be inherited by his wife. 2) 1894 check issued to the First National Bank for $2,604. Signed by HM Yerington as vice president and EB Yerington as secretary. Purple stamp on front for the Bank of California, SF, to pay. Spindle cancel.
