Steam whistles were adopted by railroads during the 1830s [Ref: Historical and Descriptive Anecdotes of Steam Engines and of their Inventors and Improvers, Robert Stuart, 1829, p. 301] and conductors were known by their signature whistling styles. This lot of 2 beautiful antique steam train whistles includes: 1) One stamped “V&T RR No.25” on the lower rim of the bell where the lever mounts. The lever is spring loaded. The lower valve nut is marked “1 1/4 Set 40”. The long shaft of this whistle indicates that it is a low-pitch whistle. If less pressure is applied to the lever, the sound will be deep. Higher pressure will force more steam through the valve, causing a higher pitched sound. 2) Rounded bell steam whistle, marked “Powell/ 1/—2” on each side of the valve. Three-channel steam aperture, tuned to play three different notes. Lever is attached to a short fob and leather cord. The lower valve stem is narrow and seems newer than the section onto which it is screwed. - Jacobitz Collection -59765
