Virginia Tax Bill on 2 Slaves and “Male Free Negroes”
1860, Albemarle County (Virginia) Tax Bill, Includes Tax on 2 Slaves and “Male Free Negroes between 21 and 55 years of age,” Very Fine.
This original, preprinted 6.75” x 8.5” form directs the Sheriff of Albemarle County to collect the annual tax on land, slaves, horses, clocks and other categories, plus a “C. & P. Levy” on White adults and Blacks. In addition, this form has a tax category for “Male Free Negroes between 21 and 55 years of age.” The name of the person or firm being taxed is handwritten at the top, the amounts have been filled in by hand, and the document is signed at the bottom. In this case, the firm of Joseph W. Campbell & Company was taxed only on 2 slaves it owned, plus some other articles of personal property. This tax bill is in very nice condition, the paper still bright, with an area of age toning in the lower right. An interesting Black History Document revealing the taxing of slaves and free Blacks in the pre-Civil War South.
