Her siblings were attorney/activist Swinburne Hale, artist Gardner Hale, and sister Margaret Hale Foster. Virginia studied art and resided in New York City, and was later a part of the Carmel artists group and a friend to Elsie Whitaker Martinez and Harriet Dean. From the Family of Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989).
