A painting on canvas, together with a collection of miscellaneous loose sketches. Artist: Virginia Swinburn Hale (1887-1981). Title/Description: Mossy rocks and forest. Signature: Signed lower left. Date Created: c. 1920s-1930s. Medium/Ground: Oil on canvas board. Size: 10 1/2in x 13 3/4in; 12in x 15in (frame). Condition: Small scuffing/marks. Together with a collection of approx. 28 loose sketches by Hale, including at least two portraits of Elsie Whitaker Martinez. Along with a framed drawing possibly by Micaela Martinez, and a small woodblock print Christmas card by C. F. Collins, dated 1935 and inscribed to "Naya" (as Hale was known by friends).  Virginia S. Hale was the daughter of Classics scholar William Gardner Hale (1849-1928). Her siblings were attorney/activist Swinburne Hale, artist Gardner Hale, and sister Margaret Hale Foster. Virginia studied art and resided in New York City and Carmel, and was a friend to Elsie Whitaker Martinez and Harriet Dean. From the Family of Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989).
