Virginia,NV - Storey County - September 1, 1889 - Comstock Tunnel Company Bond :
A $1000 cancelled first mortgage income bond, #524, signed by Theodore Sutro, President and by C.Thayer, Secretary. 54 of 60 coupons are still attached. Cancelled by punch holes and “Cancelled” stamps. Printer: Homer Lee BNC, New York. This company was the successor to the original Sutro Tunnel Co. founded by Adolph Sutro in 1866 as a drainage tunnel for the mines in Virginia City. Difficulty in raising the money for its construction delayed the tunnel’s completion until 1880, at which time Adolph Sutro sold his stock in the company. The tunnel was a success, but with the decline of the fortunes of the Comstock Lode, tunnel stock became worthless. Eventually it was foreclosed upon by McCalmont Brothers & Co. (one of the original British mortgage holders) and the property was sold at auction. A number of the old stockholders formed the Comstock Tunnel Company and took over the property, naming Theodore Sutro as its President. Theodore, Adolph’s brother, was the youngest son in the large Sutro family. Born in 1845, he was a graduate of Harvard College and a member of the New York Bar.
