Virginia Military Institute Diploma 1864 Virginia Military Institute Diploma of a New Market Cadet
Virginia Military Institute Diploma of a New Market Cadet Measuring 14" x 21.5" is nicely custom-framed. Heavy stains as shown, some signature fading and insect damage slightly affecting printed text. The vellum diploma of W.S. Carmichael, who fought with the VMI cadet battalion at the Battle of New Market. Not awarded until 1875, it was marked "Honorary May 15, 1864," the date of the battle. Carmichaels war service prevented him from graduating, but his fellow Confederate veterans conferred this great honor on him a decade later. Signed by notable confederates serving on the college board of trustees, including Gen. James L. Kemper, then Governor of Virginia, Col. Francis H. Smith, Superintendent, Col. Scott Shipp, Commander of the cadets at New Market, Col. J.T.L. Peterson, brother-in-law of and aide to "Stonewall" Jackson, Col. Walter H. Taylor, Chief of Staff to Gen. Robert E. Lee, John Letchen, Wartime governor of Virginia, and others! A remarkable artifact which is very collectable despite its condition issues.
