Virginia City Water Bond
An original City of Virginia Water Bonds certificate, No. 121, issued on 1 February 1880 to "N. Luning or Bearer" for $1000 in gold coin. Signed by J.E. Guild, Clerk of the City of Virginia, and J. S. Kaneen, Mayor of the City of Virginia. Hand cancelled in red ink through the center of the document. This bond measures 15.75" x 14" and is closely trimmed on the lower border. In its ornate frame, this item measures 24.5" x 23.25". Printer: A. L. Bancroft & Co. Litho. S. F. Features two vignettes: a central oval vignette of people and a carriage outside an impressive colonial building; and, the State Seal of Nevada along the lower portion of the certificate. The lower portion of this bond, which bore the coupons, has been cut away. The reverse of this scrip also bears handwriting, but cannot be read without removing the piece from its frame and tan/brown matting. Very good condition, with very little staining and slight fold creasing. Nicholas B. Luning, the issue, was a major stockholder of the Carson & Colorado railroad, and several places now bear his name: the Luning station along the Southern Pacific railway, and the town and post office of Luning, Nevada [Ref: Carlson, Nevada Place Names, 1974, p. 159]. John S. Kaneen served as the Treasurer of Storey County from 3 November 1868 until 1870, and J. E. Guild was a member of the Silver State Encampment No. 7, which chartered in 1874, of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows [Ref: Thompson & West, History of Nevada, 1882, pp. 607, 254].City: Virginia CityCounty: Storey CountyState: NV
