Rarity-8. 1860. Excellent strike. Earliest non-manuscript Virginia City cancel. Hand written "paid 10". Cover is addressed to Mrs. J. A. Armstrong. I believe this is mailed from her husband or sister-in-law. J. A. Armstrong and his brother K. G. bought 25 feet in the middle load of the Comstock on May 29, 1860. On October 20, 1860 they sold it back to A. B. Forbes. Between buying and selling this mining claim the Pyramid Lake Indian wars happened. Includes a history of those two battles, There can't be any coincidence our letter was mailed five days after selling the mining property. Was he writing to say he was heading home? (Extensive notes on the process of finding the author.)
