A dozen ore specimens from Comstock Lode mines within Virginia City, Nevada. Originally from the Crystal Bar collection in Virginia City. Lot includes: 1) 2.5" x 1.5" x 1.5" silver ore, Imperial Mine; 2) 1" x 1.5" x 1" silver & gold ore, Gould & Curry Mine; 3) 2" x 1.25" x 1.5" silver ore, Ophir Mine; 4) 2.5" x 1.5" x 1.25" silver & gold ore, Justice Mine; 5) 1.75" x 1.75" x 1.75" silver ore, Savage Mine; 6) 2.5" x 1.5" x 1" silver ore, Hale & Norcross Mine; 7) 2.5" x 2" x 1" silver ore, Crown Point Mine; 8) 1.75" x 1" x 1.25" silver ore, Belcher Mine; 9) 2.5" x 1.75" x 2" silver ore, Con Virginia Mine; 10) 2" x 1" x 1" quartz crystal point and, 11) 2.25" x 1" x 1.75" quartz cluster, both from the Chollar Mine; 12) 3" x 1.5" x 1.5" silver ore, Yellow Jacket Mine. Two miners by the names of Pat McLaughlin and Peter O'Reilly discovered gold in Nevada at the head of Six-Mile Canyon in 1859. By the 1870s, over $230 million had been produced by the mines and Virginia City was continuing to grow. At the peak of its glory around 1876, Virginia City was a boisterous town boasting more than 30,000 residents. The Comstock Lode was fully mined by 1898. [Ref: legendsofamerica.com] -59761
