Virginia Mining District. Incorporated in 1863. Cert. #411, issued to A.C. Chapman for 15 shares. Signed b y G. Armstrong, president, and John C. Leconey, secretary. 2 vignettes: center shows an ore filled handcart emerging from a tunnel entrance, which is on a scaffold, with valley and buildings in the valley below; at right is an allegorical Indian figure leaning on a staff, holding a tomahawk. Applied 25ct. revenue stamp at left. Black border and print. Uncancelled. “Location, Virginia Mining District” printed at left. Datelined Virginia City. Printer Towne & Bacon, San Francisco. 5 x 10.” Armstrong was a partner with Chapman in Armstrong and Chapman in Virginia City, and Leconey was a mining broker [Kelley, Virginia City Directory, 1863]. Chapman himself is not listed in Bancroft. The Becker map (Atlas of the Comstock, 1883) shows this property was located between the North Comstock on the north and the Pioneer on the south, with the Wells Fargo slipping in on part of it to the northwest. The whole affair was down dip of the Utah on the main part of the Comstock.
