The first glass negative was produced in 1839 by John Herschel, the English mathematician, astronomer, chemist, experimental photographer and inventor. Herschel originated the use of the Julian day system in astronomy, named 7 moons of Saturn and 4 moons of Uranus, made many contributions to the science of photography, investigated color blindness, and studied the chemical power of ultraviolet rays [Ref: Wikipedia.org]. This incredible collection of original glass negatives from Nevada date to around the 1880s and 1890s. The photos include scenes of Virginia City, the Sutro Tunnel, a Wells Fargo & Co. Storefront, and miners and other men with horses, carts, and equipment. The lower right hand photograph in the frame portrays men in an old car outside a building with a sign marked the "NEVADA BREWERY". The OLD NEVADA BREWERY in Nevada City, California dates from 1850. The style of car in the photo is also likely from the late 1890s. All together, there are 7 glass negatives, and the frame will hold 6. These glass negatives, though fragile, are in wonderful condition. Each negative measures 5" x 7”, and the wooden lightbox display frame is 19” x 20”. These photos may have been captured by Carleton Eugene Watkins, a noted photographer of the Comstock who worked with glass negatives and was known to have photographed the Sutro Tunnel. - Jacobitz Collection -59954
