Virgil Finlay - Fantastic Pulp Illustration Original Art (Ziff-Davis, undated). Virgil Finlay dramatizes an armored knight's desperate struggle against a horde of demonic apparitions. Virgil's illustration graced "The Master of Chaos," Michael Moorcock's first published work; what a great way to start! This spectacular drawing was created on coquille paper with pencil, pen and ink. Notes in the lower border indicate it was drawn for an April issue of Fantastic. As Randy Broecker's Fantasy of the 20th Century notes, "In the mid-1930s, a new artist started contributing beautifully detailed artwork to Weird Tales. Readers loved him and demanded more. H. P. Lovecraft even wrote a sonnet about one of his illustrations. The artist's name was Virgil Finlay. Finlay was the king of black and white interiors, both in quantity and in quality." The paper in this work was scored and folded vertically through the middle of the image. The image area measures 13" x 9.5". Virgil Finlay has signed the art at the lower right and the art is in Excellent condition. Here's a chance to win a masterwork by one of the most beloved illustrators in SF-Fantasy history, so don't miss out!

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
