Vintage Sonora RDU-209 Tabletop Tube Radio, Circa 1946
This is a classic Sonora RDU-209 tabletop tube radio from the mid-1940s, a testament to the craftsmanship and design aesthetics of the era. The radio features a gracefully contoured wooden cabinet, notable for its distinctive "wave" top design, adding a unique flair to its appearance.  The front panel is adorned with horizontal slats, a clear glass dial displaying frequency markings, and three original Bakelite knobs for tuning, volume, and tone control. The Sonora logo is prominently displayed on the dial, reinforcing the brand's reputation for quality audio equipment. The back panel retains the original Sonora label, detailing model information and pricing zones from the era. The label reads "Sonora - Clear as a Bell," underscoring the company's famous tagline. The model number, RDU-209, is clearly visible. This model operates with a six-tube superheterodyne chassis, utilizing tubes 12SA7, 12SK7, 12SQ7, 12SK7, 35L6GT, and 35Z5GT, and covers the standard AM broadcast band.  The Sonora Radio & Television Corporation, originally established as the Sonora Chime Company in 1908, evolved over the decades from producing chiming clocks to phonographs, and eventually radios. By the mid-1940s, Sonora had become a notable player in the American radio manufacturing industry, celebrated for its slogan "Clear as a Bell," which emphasized the clarity and quality of its audio products.
