This lot consists of a 19th century Plains Indian pipe bag. This exquisite example of the art of beading, measures about 14" (with bottom fringe) by 4" at its widest point. The bag is made from brain tanned deerskin and has some staining. The seed bead work is extensive with patterns done at the scalloped opening, down the side and around the widest point of the bag. The piece is sewn with real sinew, as are the different colored beads. While not vibrant in color, because of age and use, this is still a museum quality item. And any American Indian collector or institution would be proud to own it.
