Jettison of Apollo 14 lunar module 'Antares' after docking with command module 'Kitty Hawk' and the transfer of the ground crew for transearth injection, 6 February 1971.

Vintage chromogenic print on fibre-based Kodak paper, RED NUMBERED NASA AS14-74-10217, with 'A KODAK PAPER' watermarks on verso, 20.3 x 25.4 cm (8 x 10 in) [paper size, including margins], (NASA Manned Spacecraft Center).

Very light crease to right edge in blank margin.

This dramatic image, taken by Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell or Stuart Roosa, shows the Apollo 14 lunar module (LM) 'Antares' just after it was jettisoned by the command module (CM) 'Kitty Hawk'. Astronauts Shepherd and Mitchell had just returned in the LM after spending two days on the surface of the Moon. The two space vehicles docked successfully, allowing Shepherd and Mitchell to transfer into the CM with equipment and samples. The LM was then jettisoned and drifted into space before crashing into the Moon at a velocity of approximately 1,600 km/hour, setting off waves registered by the seismometers from Apollo 12 and 14.
