Vintage Moroccan Koummya Daggers (2)
Presented in this lot are two (2) Moroccan Koummya Daggers, circa 19th century to mid-20th century. The koummya is the characteristic traditional dagger of the Berber and Arabic peoples of Morocco. Localized variant of the Arabic jambiya, the contoured handles, curved double-edged blades and exaggeratedly upturned scabbard tips are all features consistent with such an interpretation. The embossed silver mounted dagger hilt pommel, guard, and scabbard feature fretted Arabic calligraphy and floral designs. The dark-stained handle is hardwood. The second koummya, circa 19th century, features a floral design stamped brass shrouded wood scabbard Arabic calligraphy and geometric design is still visible on the front of the scabbard. It also features a dark-stained hardwood handle. The blade has a hallmark at the base, most likely from a European metal supplier - the majority of metals used in the making of koummyas and jambiyas were sourced from European countries. Both daggers are in nice condition. The first measures 14"L, the blade is 8.5"L, 15"L in the scabbard. The second measures 15.25"L, the blade is 9.25"L, 15.2"L in the scabbard. Combined weight is 1lb, 12oz.
