From the Proctor Collection. Vintage East India Dhokra Cast Brass Antelope, measuring 5 1/2'' high, 3 1/2'' long and 1 1/4'' wide. Dokra metal art uses a wax casting technique dating back thousands of years. The Dokra tribes of the Bastar area of India, and the people of West Bangal and Orissa, are known for their primitive and charming metal folk art. The process of creating Dokra starts with a basic mold, made of sand and clay. Dung is usually added and then layered with beeswax. Wax threads are would around the clay mold. The clay is cooked over a furnace, allowing the wax to drain away. Molten metal, usually brass with bronze is poured inside the mold. After the metal has melted, water is used to cool the molds. The cast figures are removed and then are cleaned with sand to polish them. Figures can take from 15-30 days to finish.
Since the mold is destroyed in the process, each piece made is a unique work of art.
