Vintage Carleton Watkins Goldtone of Yosemite
Carleton Watkins Vintage Goldtone of Yosemite made from the original negative and in original frame. Sight size is 10.25" x 13.25", framed in gilt to 13.5" x 16.5". Carleton Watkins (1829-1916) was one of California's early commercial photographers. He left New York at age 21 and worked for awhile in San Jose as a daguerreotype operator before establishing his own business. On an early 1860s trip to Yosemite he found his inspiration, making 30+ large glass plates and 100+ stereoviews of the breathtaking scenery. Artistically, these photographs followed the style of many of the popular landscape painters of the era, especially those of the Hudson River School and also the Western landscapists such as Bierstadt and Moran. His images were the first photographs of Yosemite to be seen by most easterners and even influenced President Lincoln to sign a bill in 1864 protecting the valley, thus paving the way for the National Parks system.

This stunning orotone (goldtone) of a lake and mountain scene was made by printing the original negative on sensitized glass, then backing it with genuine gold dust mixed (likely) with banana oil. This photographic process offers a depth and beauty that is hard to describe. Please see the enlarged view on our website to get a better idea of the quality of this photo. Excellent condition.

Shipping: Framed - with Glass, Medium (view shipping information)
