Small summary of the biography of VINCENT VAN GOGH.
Vincent van Gogh would become one of the best known artists in the world. His paintings have touched cultures around the world and he became the archetype of the "tortured artist".
Van Gogh was born in 1853 and grew up in Holland. He grew up in a religious family with his father as a minister. When he finished his studies, Vincent followed the profession of his uncle and became an art dealer, learning the trade in Holland and then working in England and France. Vincent was successful and initially happy with his work. However, he soon grew tired of the art business, especially in Paris, and lost interest in trade. After returning home, Vincent began studying theology. Although he was very passionate and enthusiastic, he failed the exams to enter a couple of programs. Characteristic of his personality, he was intelligent, able to speak several languages, but he did not believe that Latin was a language to preach to the poor. During this period, he worked as a missionary in a coal mining community that lived with the poor and ordinary working people. As his development as a preacher stagnated, he increased his interest in those around him. He started his life as an artist.
In 1880, at age 27, Van Gogh entered the Acadmie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Belgium. The following winter, living in Amsterdam, Vincent fell in love, his heart broke and he began to paint. The next few years would result in little success in both love and art.
At the age of 16 he began working as a clerk at the Goupil Art Gallery in The Hague, which was run by his uncle. There he began his love of painting and literature.
The gallery moved to London and Vincent decided to move to a boarding house. There he led a quiet life and began to draw, but after being rejected by the woman he was in love with, he became violent and sullen and moved to Paris.
At such depressing moments in his life, he saw religion as his only path and decided to become a priest, but was not admitted to the seminary. He at last he became a preacher, appointed by the Brussels consistory, and was assigned to the Borinage. There he lived with some miners, but after supporting one of his strikes they took him out of religious life and decided to dedicate himself entirely to painting and reading.
He worked as a teacher, preacher, and bookseller, until he realized that drawing was his true passion. Thanks to his brother Theo his, he entered the Brussels Academy of Painting at the age of 27. On a trip to The Hague in 1881, he began to interact with local artist circles and decided to take an interest in still life.
Although he continued to draw, he was unable to sell his drawings or paintings and began receiving money from his brother Theo from him, with whom he wrote letters throughout his life to inform her of his situation.
Vincent began to have hallucinations and to suffer severe pain, so his brother decided to admit him to Saint Paul Hospital, where he was rejected. Saint Reney Hospital took him in and diagnosed him with epilepsy and schizophrenia.
Despite his illness, Vincent continued painting and drawing without stopping, although his works continued without success and without giving him money. He only sold two paintings in his life.
