<B>Vili (Democratic Republic of Congo, Loango region)</B></I><BR>Two Figures, One Male, One Female<BR>Ivory<BR>Male: Height: 3 inches Width: 1 inch<BR>Female: Height: 3 ½ inches Width: 1 1/8 inches<BR><BR>Although these small figures are offered together, the differences of facial treatment, especially noses and mouths, suggest that they are the work of two carvers, the one doing the woman having the finer, more delicate touch. From the mid-nineteenth century through the early twentieth, the coastal-dwelling Vili took advantage of relative independence from central Kongo authority to engage in a flourishing interaction with European traders and missionaries.
