Victorian Wheellock Sporting Carbine with Extensive Bone Inlay
Produced by an unknown assembler, with the spurious date "1643" on the stock comb. Single bead sight, with an etched twist pattern on the steel. The lock plate runs 7" long, with a light cut-through pattern on the wheel guard, scrollwork on the serpentine, accent plates on the frizzen spring, a high curved fence on the flash pan and a sliding cover. Single trigger, with a finger rest trigger guard. Smooth full length stock, with a bone tip, ebony ramrod and intricate bone inlays, including but not limited to borders, dot patterns, floral scrolls, and a number of animals, such as 3 rabbits on either side of the forearm, a goat ahead of the guard, a rabbit being assaulted by a bird on the reverse of the lock, a hunting dog on the patch box, a bear getting ready to attack a rabbit on the comb, and a set of three deer on the raised cheekpiece. Fitted with an ebony buttplate.

Condition: Fair as assembled, with a mixed brown and gray patina on the barrel with mild pitting overall. The lock has turned a darker gray, with remnants of a protective varnish coating. The stock is fair as repaired, with mended cracks and some filler material in place of two animal inlays on the left side. Mechanically untested.
