Lot of 9 mugs of an early vintage--the newest one is dated 1945--but the others are much earlier. All are the standard shape of coffee mugs and are personalized with the names of their owners, as was common custom in the days when men patronized their local barbershops for a shave and the mugs were kept there. All 9 mugs are decorated with gold leaf highlights and most have floral or leaf designs. The best are two Limoges mugs from France. One mug is marked as being made in Germany, another is marked K TK (Knowles, Taylor Knowles, Ohio), one marking is too blurred to read, and another is embossed with the initials JHK on the bottom. The others are unmarked. Shaving mugs became popular in the 1870s and began to fade in popularity in the 1920s, although some users held on until aerosol shaving creams became available in the 1950s. They were usually of French or German origin. The most collectible today are "occupational" mugs decorated to tout the owner’s profession.
