This lovely oak Dickens desk was originally crafted in England during the Victorian period, around 1890. This style of desk is named after Charles Dickens, the great English author. Apparently he was one of the first people to popularize this style of desk, and thus they have taken on his name. These desks are very, very rare and often sold for thousands of dollars more than our auction prices. This particular desk is a very good example of the style. The oak has aged beautifully and now reveals a pleasant, light patina. The patina is a highly desirable quality of fine antiques, making this piece quite a nice find. The top of this desk has three sections of inlaid green leather. The leather makes an ideal writing surface, far superior to wood, glass, or metal. The center is slanted, making it all the more comfortable to write on. To each side of the top can be found a tower with four small shelves with a locking mechanism similar to a wellington chest (there is a hinged piece of wood just covering the edge of the shelves which can lock all shelves at once) but unfortunately there is no working key. Also, the slanted writing surface pulls up to reveal a storage space underneath. It locks in place using the key hole from what appears to be a drawer underneath it but is merely a faux drawer front. However, the rest of the drawers in the base and pedestals are real. They each feature dovetailed joints as well as double knob pulls, and though they have locks, there is no working key. ...
