This photograph of a young child is from the very late 19th-early 20th century. Dressed in a long white gown, she is peeking from behind a chair with an open back of turned dowels.

The wooden frame, which is in the Oxford, "cross-end" style, has an impressed design similar to that of the pressed oak used in kitchen shelf clocks of the period. The frame is shellacked and shows a trailing flower design. Each of the "cross-ended" corners has leaves affixed over it at an angle. The frame has a gold interior.

The picture within the frame is nearly 10 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Including the extended corners, the frame measures 13 1/2 x nearly 10 3/4 inches. It has a wire for hanging on the back. On the back also is the name "Josephine" written in pencil.

This photograph is in very good condition considering its age! Overall, the frame is strong and in good condition. There are some areas where the shellac has worn off the wood. The glass is broken in the lower left corner, perhaps from falling off a wall.

This will make a great acquisition for a Victoriana collector!
