Ingenious Victorian locket, with spring-loaded action. This is the only one I have seen of these.

A very decorative mourning brooch, dating from the late 1800s. Made in pinchbeck, it has a large central amethyst-coloured glass stone, faceted at the edges, and concave in the centre.
There is a small hole in the centre, and this once probably was where a single pearl or even a jet bead would have been secured. This could be replaced easily. The brooch has an unusual hinged front panel, which springs open at the press of a small button to reveal a locket compartment beneath the stone which would have carried a keepsake of the ?loved one? - usually hair, or a photo, or something small. This one still has a scrap of a photograph in it , but dating from the 20th century, so not the original. The brooch is in very good condition, except at the rear, a new pin has been fitted, and this is in silver metal, not brass.
Brooch measures 41 mm diameter (1.5/8 inches).
