A collection of over 100 pieces includes works by Minton, George Jones and Wedgwood, together with a wide variety of decorative English, Continental and American Majolica suitable for all tastes and budgets. This auction is under the direction of Nicholas M. Dawes, author of the standard work Majolica, an appraiser for the PBS series Antiques Roadshow, and and a well-known decorative arts expert. It will be followed by an auction of art tiles, including a fine and large private collection of Majolica glazed tiles. The Art Tile Auction has been organized by Suzanne Perrault, who specializes in American art tile and is an expert appraiser for the PBS series AntiquesRoadshow. It will include several hundred tiles and tile panels. American makers will include the extremely popular Grueby pottery, Marblehead, Rookwood, Owens, and Wheatley, an extensive collection of Moravian tiles, a rare Van Briggle tile, as will a broad collection of architectural terra-cotta designed by George Elmslie for two Indiana schools. 19th Century tiles from here and abroad will make up a good portion of the sale. Some fine and rare hand-painted panels by Charles Volkmar, ca. 1880, will be sold alongside examples from all the best American Victorian tile-makers, such as J. & J.G. Low (including plastic sketches), the American Encaustic Tiling Company, the Trent tile company, Providential, Old Bridge, and U.S. Encaustic. California companies, having come into recent popularity, will be represented by Claycraft, Tudor, and Batchelder, among others. Harris Strong, will be represented with a variety of panels done in the 1950s and ‘60s..An extensive collection of European Art Nouveau will be offered for the first time, including several fine panels and trays with tiles from the German firm of Johann Von Schwarz. Several other German, Belgian, and French tile makers’ 6” tiles will be available, either as single pieces, or most often, in groups to use as friezes for walls, fireplace surrounds, or simply, to be mounted in frames and displayed. The auction will offer many Dutch tiles by Rozenburg and De Porceleyne Fles . English companies will include Minton’s, Pilkington’s, Sherwin & Cotton, William de Morgan. Ms. Perrault can be contacted directly at 609-397-1802 or Suzanne@ragoarts.com. Mr. Dawes can be contacted directly at 212-473-5111 or nmdawes@aol.com.
