<td width="100%">
The Victorian's were very fond of designs from ancient history, which in turn encouraged many revivals of early jewelry. The height of the Etruscan Revival period was around the mid to late 1800's This lovely brooch is a highly detailed and very ornate Etruscan brooch from the Victorian era. I do believe this is a mourning brooch as garnets were often used during that period in the design of mourning jewellery. It is a highly dimensional piece, it has the appearance of two wide wedding rings, slightly angled toward each other and joined together by a linked chain at the centre. The chain has the Etruscan detailing on half of the links and the other half remains smooth.. At the end of each "ring" are three garnets, individually faceted and prong set and surrounded by ornate Etruscan design. The outer perimeter of the two "rings" have been plated with rose gold and the remainder of the piece is gilted, probably over brass. The original closure has been replaced with a more modern safety close. This lovely piece is a wonderful example of both Victorian era jewellery and the fine and detailed Etruscan workmanship in it's design. This brooch is in excellent condition but could use a cleaning. I have left in it's original condition with patina intact. The brooch measures 2" inches from east to west and 3/4" inches from north to south and a depth or sitting height of approximately 1/2" inch. The second picture has been considerably lightened to show detail.
