The Victorian Aesthetic Movement, the avant-garde's response to the Industrial Revolution, began in earnest around 1860. Its earliest proponents (Morris, Burne-Jones, Rosetti and their set) were in England, where we acquired this marvelous gypsy fortune-telling table in sensational shape for its age (circa 1870), with what appears to be its original fabric covering edged with silken fringe. We've done nothing but give it a light polish, so you can fully appreciate the original condition. There are very few flaws: a few chips and a small crack (easily reglued) on one side of the orb through which the bobbin-turned legs are anchored. Three legs are always present on gypsy tables and the better ones have a central element through which they pass; on lesser types, they just splay out like three-legged stools.<BR><BR>On American shores, gypsy tables are few and typically much later examples -- missing the needlework that was integral to the style and often stripped of their customary ebonized finish. The only other example I saw online is of Edwardian vintage, stripped back to bare wood and priced at $1,450. Even fine woods were often stained or lacquered black during this era, the idea being to emulate ebony, a very dark and close-textured exotic hardwood. What wood underlies the fabric top of our table is unknown, but the underside appears to be deal (what the English call oak), which was generally used for putting things together.
