<B>Victoria gold Proof Half-Sovereign, 1853.</B></I> Young Head. S-3859. Small Date variety with the digit "3" recut. Reeded edge. Very rare, mintage unknown but listed as R2 by Rasmussen & Wilson (WR-346), and the traditional cataloguing comment for more than a century has always been "very few struck." Perhaps that is the general estimate of rarity for this issue, but seldom does one encounter a specimen as beautiful as the present piece. Seems harshly graded as PR63 CAM PCGS because this is a very lovely Choice cameo Proof, its deeply mirrored fields offset by a soft contrast in the queen's delicate, young portrait, and a similar effect is to be found on the reverse with its lightly frosted shield. Die-bulge produced a tiny die-break on the right obverse field. One of the most desirable of English Victorian gold coins.
