Victoria copper Proof Halfpenny, 1860. Young Head. S-39
Victoria copper Proof Halfpenny, 1860. Young Head. S-3949. P-1552. Peck rates this "ER" or extremely rare, and in fact it's so rare that he actually gives footnotes (2nd edition, page 409) about it, noting one piece exists in the British Museum collection. No currency halfpennies were made of this style, in copper, in 1860. This specimen is literally that--a "specimen" of the coinage, which was being phased out in 1860 in favor of the new, thinner, bronze coinage. This copper piece is, in fact, a Proof of Record. Peck explains this in part, in scattered comments throughout his tome. Importantly, this is a marvelous example! PR66 BN NGC (Norweb pedigree, noted on the slab insert), literally gleaming. It has deep mirrors that are sheathed by a delicate and fascinating blue iridescence. It is also almost flawless, with a perfect, full strike. The vertical lines that are evident on the obverse are raised die-lines,not hairlines. This famous piece has floated around the marketplace for twenty years, since being sold in the mid-1980s in one of the Norweb auctions held in London by Spink. It deserves to be at home in some advanced collection, and off the market. It's a treasure!
Ex Norweb Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
