This is a vintage Victoreen Model 1A CDV-715 radiological survey meter, an ion chamber instrument originally commissioned for the United States Office of Civil Defense. The unit is constructed with a rectangular metal housing finished in yellow paint and features a top-mounted metal carrying handle and a black plastic selector knob. The face of the instrument is marked with the following text: OCD ITEM NO. CDV-715, MODEL NO. 1A SER. NO. 248692, THE VICTOREEN INSTRUMENT CO., and CLEVELAND, OHIO. The analog dial features a scale from 0 to 5 r/hr (Roentgens per hour) and is marked 715-16-29. The selector switch includes positions for OFF, CIRCUIT CHECK, ZERO, X100, X10, X1, and X0.1. The side of the case bears the official blue, white, and red Civil Defense logo. This specific instrument includes a silver sticker from the Texas Department of Health indicating it was property of the state and calibrated. An additional paper label on the side from the Texas Department of Health in Austin shows an inspection and calibration grid with handwritten entries dating from 1983 to 1991. A warning printed on the front reads WARNING PREVENT CORROSION REMOVE ALL BATTERIES WHEN NOT IN USE. The housing is secured by two metal side latches.
