French actress (1806–1883) who abandoned her career after becoming the mistress of Victor Hugo, to whom she acted as a secretary and traveling companion. Partial ALS in French, signed “J.,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, January 2, 1836. Letter to Victor Hugo, in part (translated): “You have not cared a single moment about me this evening although I have never admired or loved you more than earlier today...I love you every day some more and every day a little less. This is it, I feel miserable and I cry and I would like to die and I love you even more.” In very good condition, with moderate overall toning, show-through from writing to opposing sides of the page, and a thin mounting strip along the left edge. A passionate piece of one of the most famous romantic correspondences of the 19th century.
