Victor Emmanuel II of Italy Document Signed
Victor Emmanuel II of Italy Document Signed "Victor Emmanuel" as king of Piedmont, one page, 9" x 12.5", in Italian, February 24, 1855, Turin. Victor Emmanuel II, King of Italy (1820-1878) was the King of Piedmont, Savoy, and Sardinia from 1849 to 1861. He assumed the title King of Italy to become the first king of a united Italy, a title he held until his death in 1878. Victor Emmanuel joined Britain and France in the war against Russia, in an effort to obtain their good will. He sought British support and the help of France's Napoleon III in a campaign against Austria in 1858 that he hoped would lead to Italian unification. After military reverses, Piedmont only gained Lombardy. Victor Emmanuel persisted. He sent his forces to fight the papal army at Castelfidardo and drove the Pope into Vatican City. Victor Emmanuel II's success at these goals got him excommunicated from the Catholic Church. Then, plebiscites in Naples and Sicily called for union with Sardinia-Piedmont and Italy grew even larger. On February 18, 1861 the Kingdom of Italy was officially established and Victor Emmanuel II became its king. Some toning at the edges, otherwise, a fine document.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
