Victor D. Brenner 1907-Dated Bronze Plaque
Victor D. Brenner 1907-Dated Bronze High-Relief Plaque mounted on marble. This is another great example of the Lincoln plaque that inspired the long-running and ubiquitous Lincoln Cent. Brenner was a Jewish Russian immigrant who fashioned this legendary Lincoln profile after an 1864 photograph taken by Anthony Berger. Theodore Roosevelt saw on of these plaques in 1908 while sitting for a medal portrait and suggested that Brenner be commissioned to create the design for the soon-to-be-issued Lincoln Cent celebrating the centennial of Lincoln's birth, the first U.S. coin to bear a president's likeness. As all coin collectors know, there was a controversy regarding the prominence of Brenner's V.D.B. "signature" on the reverse of the coins when they were first issued. The initials were soon removed thus creating one of the key coins in the Lincoln cent series.

This plaque is in similar excellent condition as the lot above with maybe just a bit more wear on the highest points leading to a pleasing highlighted effect. The 8.5" x 11" marble tablet it is mounted to has two cracks- one horizontal all the way across the center and one diagonal on the top left. The stand is intact and the damage is barely noticeable from the front. If desired, the bronze plaque could certainly be removed and remounted. An item that should have strong appeal to both numismatists and collectors of Lincolniana.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Larg (view shipping information)
