In small part, "...Your letter awakens anew the sad feelings we bear the ? and brave heroes we lost at Vicksburg while we were under the command of 'King Alcohol' (don't be surprised for such was the case)...Baker of our Co[mpany] died the 24 Jan at St John's Hospital Paducha. That makes four of the best boys we had...Truly our loss was great for only having thirty nine men in the action...Ellis was struck by a small piece of shell...just below the knee, which severed the main artery causing death by bleeding...Wm Arnett was shot...the ball lodged in the...lungs...Baker shot through the knee by a minnie all...life might have been spared if his leg had been amputated..."
