AE Sestertius, Tarraco mint, struck A.D. 71. Laureate head left of Vespasian. Reverse: Victory standing right with foot on helmet, writing OB.CIVE.SER. on shield placed on palm tree. RIC 464 [as Scarce]. BMC 784. Cayon 224. H-777. Beautiful olive-green patina Extremely Fine.

Extremelly Rare. This extraordinary rarity was part of the empire-wide coinage celebrating the Roman victory in the Jewish War, achieved under the command of Vespasian and finally of Titus. What sets this piece apart is the remarkable style of its portrait of Vespasian. It is, if such a thing is possible, an idealizing portrait of an aged man. It shows the creases in this forehead, but the flesh of his cheeks is firm and his expresion commanding. A wonderful example of the finest style.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.
Ex Antiqua XIV, lot 145.

Our item number 137972
<IMAGES>

</IMAGES>
