Very scarce Johnson & Bye prototype air pistol, manufactured by Quackenbush, circa about 1834, 10" barrel, serial #18, predecessor to the Champion. The metal surfaces are fair to good with scatteredlight to moderate erosion; the top of the frame is stamped "Dumonthier", who were well known dealers and manufacturers in Europe. The grips show a break in repair. The pistol is not working as the gaskets havegotten weak and need replacing, but the parts are complete and restorable. The action opens by a latch and the pistol is charged by a pumping hand action. Est.: $600-$1,200
