Very interesting deluxe inscribed “Gen. Winfield Scott” U.S. Single Shot Martial flintlock pistol by Johnson, .54 cal., 8-1/2” barrel, period engraved barrel and mountings with silver over copper plating to iron parts, fancy grained wood ¾ stock with attached swivel ramrod, lock dated 1837. This gun is in overall very good condition showing approx. 90% of the original silver plating and the balance showing the copper under plating; extensive and patriot motif engravings including the spread eagle, scallops and fancy florals, banners and symmetric bursts; the name “Gen. Winfield Scott” is prominently featured on the center top portion of the barrel in the same engraver’s hand; the bore is not pitted, the action crisp, the wood is better-than-average and has only scattered scratches and nicks from storage; on the left side of the stock on the lock plate screw plate is the stamping “Burmingham CT.” . Accompanying this lot are two brass and two bronze commemorative medals celebrating General Winfield Scott; one a Congressional resolution related to his participation in the battles of Chippewa and Niagara; two medals of a resolution of Congress dated March 9, 1848 for his Mexican War service and one medal from the State of Virginia commemorating his service as Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. forces during the War with Mexico. Also included are four leather bound books on Military subjects, dated 1817, 1830, 1847 and 1847 with both of the latter volumes being noted in the front cover as from the General Scott Library. Additionally, there is a large black and white framed and matted engraving of General Scott in uniform, approx. 30” X 24” in overall good condition. Little John’s sold this fancy presentation pistol many years ago from an old estate and it now returns for auction from the estate of the buyer Richard Wolfe. Although exacting provenance is not present at this time, the engraving and inscription in our opinion, is definitely period and the pistol itself is not your average issue Johnson flintlock. Est.: $1,500-$3,000.
