Very fine Toledo-marked dagger with gold damascene decoration in Islamic style and motifs. The front of the crossguard shows a double-headed Russian type imperial eagle. The body of the knife and scabbard show veryfine quality gold Damascus work with raised silver bead work. Also appears to be Islamic writing and other motifs. Measures 11” from tip to end. Tine to near excellent condition with just some slight discoloration. Blademarked “Fabric de Toledo” and is nicely etched also in mideastern motifs. The blade is good to very good. The Toledo armory was famous for this type gold damascene work in the 19th century where it was reborn underthe ideas and designs of E. Zuluaga, who studied under LePage and examined the Arabic methods of gold damascene work which he recreated in the 19th century and created weapons and objects which won majorexhibitions. A limited number of these objects were made in an ancient Islamic style such as this dagger, and it is curious to have a Russian-type eagle at the center, unless it was made on special commission for
